An afternoon out in Jakarta with family, first lunching at a fish restaurant at Jakarta's modern waterfront area, Ancol. Followed by a stroll along the quai at Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta's ancient port dating from the 13th Century. Here the impressive wooden schooners (or, 'pinisi' in local parlance) are docked. These ships and their sailors' practices little changed for many hundreds of years...

Sunda Kelapa ("Coconut of Sunda", in Sundanese) is located on the Ciliwung River estaury. It was the main port for the Sunda Kingdom of West Java which existed from 7th Century until the 1570's. Today the old port accommodates only the pinisi, a traditional two masted wooden sailing ship serving inter-island freight service in the archipelago. Although it is now only a minor port, Jakarta had its origins in Sunda Kelapa and it played a significant role in the city's development....

And finally, an evening meal of, guess what, more fresh fish washed down with yet more Bintang! Setting us up nicely for our first time trip on Emirates' super-jumbo Airbus A380... a welcome improvement in the conditions of long-haul travel.
