FACEBOOK JANUARY - JULY 2010

5-JAN Just finished a 'blog' of our year 2009 with photos (of course), and links to our holidays photo album, where I've added our trip tp Malaysia, Sumatera and Java four months ago.

John & Yvonne 2009 Blog

http://www.johntowen.com/

10-JAN Spent the morning in Saatchi's Gallery, one of the great free-stuff-to-do in London. (Well he can well afford philanthropy so who am I to refuse!). Particularly enjoyed the basement gallery which is in fact the basement gallery exactly half-filled with sump oil! (A sculpture by the way). And the biggest origami I've ever seen, life-size blue pianist from a single sheet of tarpaulin.

18-JAN Lovely sunshine blue-skies and may be 10 degrees in the Chiltern Hills this morning. No idea quite how I managed to get there for a walk by 11am though: After stomping around several Camden bars all evening - including the excellent Hawley Arms - missing the last tube, walking home in the pouring rain by 2am, *and* having not eaten anything all night (!! ~ Andy !! ~ Pete !!)

22-JAN Back from the thankfully un-frozen but instead very wet North/East of England, where sadly we buried my good friend and colleague Tony. May He Ride in Peace.

23-JAN  Best movie I've seen for ages. Highly recommended even if not your usual preferred genre: 2008 release now out on DVD, official trailer at http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3480485913/ winner 57 awards so far. Not to be confused with an appalling Hollywood re-make now in production!

24-JAN  Went this Sunday morning to the "Beatles to Bowie the Sixties Exposed" exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. Contrary to popular belief I can't remember the decade first-hand being only 13 when it ended! (At least not the Swinging London part). Must remember not to leave these things til the last day though... it was mobbed, but still an enjoyable hour or two ;)

24-JAN Went see 3D Avatar at last ~ Brilliant !

29-JAN Absolutely blistering new song (Ha Ha Li Li) from Sa Dingding precursor of new album for 2010, her second: To be released on real-world old-fashioned CD 8-Feb, but already No.1 on i-Tunes evidently!

薩頂頂 Sa Ding Ding - 天地記 MV

1-FEB ...off to Emirates stadium now to see ManU thrash the Arsenal !

...and so"we" did, 3-1 Ha ha ha!

3-FEB ... a light dusting of snow here in Bedfordshire today (and in Town this morning before we left...) ... waiting for my lunch ~ so where is it then??

ps. went to Santa Pod while there and watched lots of folks pointlessly (but that's the attraction isn't it ;) burning tons of rubber, shredding huge tyres and generally polluting the planet something rotten - fab!

8-FEB After lunch a walk, from Tower Bridge to just East of Canary Wharf. Chanced on the Brunel Museum, sited in the pump house of the elder Brunel's Thames Tunnel of 1824 - the first under-river tunnel in the World and the oldest part of the London Underground still in used today. Interesting. Must return on a sunny day as ...no less than *nine* pubs en route i.e. one every six minutes!

20-FEB Speeding across a sunny Gloucestershire in a 1st class carriage (free ticket!) all to myself. The West Coast line Brunel's engineering masterpiece. Will visit Slimbridge wetlands reserve for a spot of bird-watching in the morning. As you do...

20-FEB Not a sign of the portended 'wintry showers' around the Severn Estuary today, in fact bright if breezy at Britain's premiere wetlands reserve: Saw a great many ducks.

21-FEB Off to see Alessi tonight, Yippee! see LIVE in Manchester~ http://www.last.fm/music/Alessi%27s+Ark/+videos/+1-5uSfJJWjtiI

www.last.fm

27-FEB In the library this AM .... miffed that my fave the Diamond Sutra not on show ~ what just because it's the worlds' oldest printed book (868 AD!) and has to be preserved! Bah. Had to content with the "Codex Sinaiticus" an over-One Thousand Six Hundred year-old hand-written book http://www.codexsinaiticus.org/en/ *Amazin'*

Codex Sinaiticus - Home

www.codexsinaiticus.org

Codex Sinaiticus is one of the most important books in the world. Handwritten well over 1600 years ago, the manuscript contains the Christian Bible in Greek, including the oldest complete copy of the New Testament

13-Mar On the way back from Brunel Museum wandered along the beach at sunset, only 30 minutes from our place... who'd a thought it! VIDEO HERE LINK (Music courtesy of my friend Reid and his Tree-top Flyers, check 'em out on MySpace etc)

13-Mar Special occasion at the Brunel Museum, Rotherhithe: For the last time *ever* the public allowed to walk the Thames Tunnel - first underwater one in the World and still the oldest pasrt of the oldest underground system in the World. In fact I was the very last person of all those remaining queued to be let in!

Andy Hamer

I would have liked to have been there, Brunel was truly an amazing engineer.

7-MAR Off in 5 mins (if Yvonne is ever ready!!) to the local jazz club, a pastime we're particularly fond of especially of a Sunday evening, when usually it's quiet(er) but not tonight as these guys are real popular just now!

Dave O'Higgins/Eric Alexander Tour 2010

They were *really* good: Check out the sounds at: http://www.jazzizit.co.uk/albums/sketchbook.html

7-MAR Crunchy frost under-foot in the Chilterns this morning but unrelenting sunshine (at long last!) Signs of Spring abounding, snow-drops a-dropping, skylarks a-singing, crocii-ususes's threatening to a-bloom any day soon. Afterwards a pint of Brakespear's Golden and a corned-beeef sandwich to cap it all off. Sunday. Tremendous.

14-MAR Watching the ad reels, waiting for 3D Alice in Wonderland to start. Love this technology, hope it's as cool as Avatar!

OK - totally TRIPEE there! Nox spotz off Avatar: Being a classically fabulous story definitely helps (Rather than the dumbed-down save-a-tree parable that let down Cameron's effort so badly!). And equally, or probably more, stunning visuals. Alice Rocks :)

20-MAR Really drizzly today rambling in the Chilterns/South Oxfordshire countryside... but a nice warm log-fire in the pub lunch-time :)

21-MAR OKAY now... That was totally F*#¢¤^G awesome!!! Noisettes are God! Venue distinctly dodgy (Hertfordshire Uni Students Union!) But this didn't deter the act - one number performed by Shingai Shoniwa dangling by her feet only offa a convenient banister 20 feet above the audience. Lucky she used to be in a circus then, e...h! Ultra cool. And punk-bluesy too. Perfection :)

27-MAR Stepped out 10am to wander UCL campus, had a look at the little exhibit in the peaceful cloisters about Jeremy Bentham, co-founder of Utilitarianism. Being Saturday the wardrobe he sits in was locked up (need to go on a weekday) so borrowed this photo of his body preserved here since 1832... 27-MAR So, great free stuff in London: Petrie Museum of Egyptology on UCL campus (5 mins walk ~ 25 years to get to it!). Brit Museum is pants compare this!! Volunteer curators hand out torches so's to better inspect the myriad exquisitely detailed items. Amazing head of young woman complete with luxuriant hair with... hair-pi...ns still in 2000 years later!!! Amazin'. Best of all: See World's oldest garment... a 5000-year old dress. Brilliant.

29-MAR ...at the Peggy Sue gig now, awaiting their presence on stage 3 yards away - up close & personal ;) Check 'em on MySpace (as /peggyWho) & elsewhere ~ 'ere we go-go !

3-APRIL Out walking on the cliff-tops near Cardiff, of all places!! Set off early before the forecast rain sets-in! Unexpect splendid countryside here in this "Vale of Glamorgan". Took some photo but can't be doing with uploading using just this phone :(

26-APRIL The Man as we never heard him before. Delivered in entirely nihilistic demeanour (... and who better!) as inspired by a Michel Houellebecq novel. "...ballads, some in French, shades of bossa nova and New Orleans jazz" ... voice peaking after all these (62) years. As ever, a dodgy preoccupation... with the loving of "dawgs"! Hear and weep (!)

Iggy Pop Préliminaires

Ce titre

1-MAY Was never so sodden wet as last night coming back from Camden Crawl ! And all to do again today, with minimal improvement in the weather forecast :(

2-MAY So, the Crawl ended dry (the weather, that is!) but flee-ing cold!! Better luck next year - *we hope*. But made a couple of excellent 'discoveries'... ROX, for starters, seriously talented at 21, debut album on order (7-June). Typical Londoner... Iranian-Jamaican from Norbury where-else! ( ~ we lived in the station the...re for a while!). It works! She does Rox ;)

3-MAY Off to see Iggy in about an hour, here's an account of last night's show!!

Iggy and the Stooges at Hammersmith Apollo, W6 live reviews | Music | Arts & Entertainment - Times O

entertainment.timesonline.co.uk

With the death of the guitarist Ron Asheton last year it looked as if it was all over for the Stooges — again. But in another twist in an already surreal tale, the vacancy coincided with James Williamson, ...

3-MAY An awesome performance as ever by the Igster. Apart from becoming seriously over-heated at one stage, came out of the mosh pit remarkably unscathed (for a nice change!). Or, at least seems so right now... will maybe discover a few aches and bruises in the morning ;)

Janey Robertson and Timo Budow like this.

Liz Biscoe

well i saw his bum on tv today, on the programme loose women, discussing the fact that at 67 he should not be showing his butt off in such a loose fasion. ! before he ironed it anyway lol , some things need to be left to the imagination!!!!!

John Owen

...fair's fair, he's only 62 actually Liz - but, yes from three rows back his butt hanging out is far from a pretty sight ;)

4-MAY I wanna go the beach, I don't care if it's decadent
I don't know where my spirit went, but that's alright
I wanna go to the beach, cos there's nowhere I want to be
And nobody I want to see, but that's alright.
Particles of pain in my brain - I guess they're here to stay
They work their way inside, and I can't hide or even walk away
You can convince the World that you're some kind of superstar
when an ass-hole is what you are, that's alright
Waiting, hating, the shit life throws my way
Hating, waiting, to make my escape
I wanna go to the beach.

cheer up. It might not happen.

John Owen

Clearly, you haven't yet read the book ;)

8-MAY http://natccu.com/category/live/

(turned out... I'm down with some throat lurgy and fairly bruised ribs after Monday's melee at Iggy,... perhaps should act my age?)... any-old-way: Here's the other big discovery for me of Camden Crawl last weekend: Hard psychedelia from Tokyo's Natccu: http://natccu.com/category/live/

14-MAY Just in from hearing Natccu & her band in an Islington pub - mebbe audience of 50. Superb gig, really tight - pretty amazin for a band than hadn't played together until a week ago. She's back to Tokyo until the Autumn. Bummer

Timo Budow Hey John! Yes, I've heard of Natccu, but haven't checked out her act. I'm sure she does lots of gigis in Tokyo so will try to catch here one day. I'm pretty excited about seeing The Cult this Friday though. Hope all is well. Best to Yvonne, too! timo

15-MAY Streaking up the motorway in a nicely wa shed bright red motor... Cumbria bound...

Andy Hamer

Have a good trip

John Owen

Arrived in record travel time, of recent times anyhow. 3.33hrs for 272 miles, av 82 mph door-to-door... so confess to having been pushing it a little in places - and cruising no less than 90 except for B'ham ringroad... not often that happens any more in this congested isle!

David Gera

Not that anyone would admit to going over 70mph .... Have a good time up north!

17-MAY Spectacular day walking on a Fell overlooking Coniston Water, Lake District - three of the four seasons in an afternoon tho'! Typical. Great fun, despite an hour spent wander ing aimlessly trying to pick up the trail across boggy moor :(

Andy Hamer

thats why you need gps or os map on your i phone!!!

John Owen

...could have taken a bearing, but decided against, seemed I had it pegged at that point... GPS Pah! NO fun at all - no wonder the age of the craftsman has passed!

Andy Hamer

Some say the earth's flat!

Mark Houghton

Plenty of crafty men around here JTO...

23-MAY Scorchio!! (...for the time of year, anyway) walking in the Chiltern Hills this morning - thought I might have been in Crete for a while there ;)

My alter-ego...

23-MAY This is what I so like about London: So, only a day ahead you get seats at a Sadler's Wells staging, of an Aussie produced 'musical', show-casing Bollywood movie star-dancers who - no expert I tho' but - seems absolute top class to me. Bright and energetic in spades! ('The Merchant of Bollywood', a recommend if you're... in Town anytime soon.)

31-MAY An almost total non-appearance of the sun for a British Spring bank holiday - at least no sign of it in 'Royal' Berkshire at any rate! But at least it didn't rain and made for nice cool hiking conditions (...and no good reason for *not* being in the pub between times ;)

5-JUNE Going back to university for an afternoon: East London, Docklands campus... some talks and demo's about 'green IT': Could be dead boring or else provide some interesting business ideas ~ what the hey!

Karen Fletcher

Good way to spend a Saturday, I guess? I am finished for the summer!!!! The joys of teaching! One of them anyway. Love to Yvonne.

(Hi Karen...) Well would have been, if not for fighting grid-locked traffic for an hour (Thanks! To the ass-hole who decided to close the Blalckwall Tunnel on a Saturday lunch-time ~ brilliant thinking !!). So diverted to a mate's sunny back-garden for a while, then on to visit a Buddhist Centre I wanted to see - found it's closed at weekends.. aargh! Not the most successful of outings ;) Back home. Where's dinner?

Oh well. There will be another weekend or not. As for dinner, I have decided to leave that to Clive these days. I don't like cooking anymore. We share...

6-JUNE I'm always cheered to find myself only 40 minutes drive from London's West End where I can walk for two hours (as this morning) without seeing a single person ... The Chilterns:

www.chilternsaonb.org

8-JUNE ...off to see the delightful Alessi's Ark in a few minutes, just noticed last night she's on up the road in Camden: Must've been a late addition as the support act for some chap called John Grant (Mojo Honours List 2010 evidently) ~ never heard of him, but he's of the same genre and apparently will deliver "an evening ...of profound emotional revelation"... so there ya go!

(later..) Alessi great as always. The bloke Grant, well! If I say Leonard Cohen is an absolute hoot by comparison... this would be to under-state the man's mood!! What more can be said of an artist who introduces a composition with an anecdotal reference to his mother's hystorectomy?

10-JUNE I think last time I was in Manchester rail station steam trains were still in use! Can't see the station has changed all that much. But this new 'tilting' train of Virgin gets from/to London in 2 hours 8mins... not bad at all.

13-JUNE (MY MOM’S BIRTHDAY) Wandered a couple of early Sunday hours (i.e. while the tourists yet were breakfasting) around the 'Temple' area near the river here. Amazing the history still evident right on our doorstep! The temple of the Knights Templar who, on having their butts kicked on the last of the crusades, then had their properties occupi...ed by the 14th Century lawyers, it being consequently to this day one of the 'Inns of Court'.

17-JUNE ...the excitement mounts: Off in about an hour to see ROX at Scala, Kings X ... it is going to be (as they say...) utterly awsome. If you haven't listened already then chekc her out, it doesn't get much better than this ~ apart from being there Live of course!

We can agree I have seen a few great shows in my time? I just got back from the BEST GIG I EVER SAW IN MY LIFE!! At the front of an audience of 900, largest she ever played to - incredibly! An utterly compelling performane: Modesty precludes my revealing the words she so kindly inscribed on my CD ;)

18-JUNE Video about the history of (and recent theats to...) Charlotte Street and our Fitzrovia neighbourhood. Opens with a clip from the Beatles film "Help" of fab four running to perform in the building we look on to from our front-room ~ folklore or what!

19-JUNE (Click on the YouTube link for much better sound!...) Rox at the Scala Thursday if you pause this at seconds 12 & 13 that's my hand, nose(!) and forehead at the very bottom right. And, YES... some definite audience participation with yours-truly happening right there :)

21-JUNE Sunday, as close to a perfect day as I could come: At the London Wetlands Centre first-thing for an hour or so bird-watching. By 1pm, was at the V&A Museum to catch a short acoustic set by the diva-in-waiting ROX. (...part of the BBC's "Blast" initiative, kind of work-expereince in creative arts and media for young peo...ple.). After, took in some of the collection notably the Asian Buddhas. On the way home caught a 'trad' folk singer, Martin Ledner, doing a set on the lawn, and bought his CD. Well worth it. Have a listen...

24-JUNE Departed to five days of Alfa Romeo Centenary festivities. A little sad? Maybe. But then again, excellent excuse to hang out in Milan :)

24-28 JUNE We had a few days in Milan

Milano June 10

28-JUNE Couldn't post anything much the past five days... Milan didn't seem to agree with my phone when it came to getting a connection! ~ was hardly bothered tho' far too much else to see and drink ;)

29-JUNE ...going thru the post on return home and thrills! At Long Last it's arrived!! My very own copy of the best movie ever "Let The Right One In"... must see (but don't be alone in the dark ;)

1-JULY John Owen Excellent day - that was :) (apart from that game!!)

Enjoying a drink with friends at Lake Como, Italy.

by:David Gera

3-JULY Indoors all day, bit of shame in view of the good weather! Attended an 'un-conference' aka a 'bar-camp' (! ~ could've been worse, might've been a camp-bar ;) A bunch of keen folks discussing Green IT, so of some interest ... and has to be the way to go.

4-JULY  Sunday lunch & a ramble, Great British tradition. The Bear at Home, North Moreton, South Oxfordshire - excellent ale but no sausages on Sundays - Bah! Was looking forward to that! Nevermind walk on the North Wessex Downs there was peaceful, saw only one old lady with geriatric dog and a cyclist (...one too many ;) in ...the near 3 hours to cover 13 kms! Not bad considering the pretty sweltering weather.
